Every now and then I discover a place with a dish so good that I have to tell everyone I know: Go here. Get this. Ask no questions.
I’ve never been the biggest fan of ceviche – though I am now – and I avoided Mariscos Chihuahua for years until a lawyer-client insisted we go there for lunch. He also insisted I get the Fresh Fish Culichi which is a poached white fish smothered in a light, creamy, green sauce topped with shredded, melted white Mexican cheese. With every bite I collapsed further into a love affair with the flavor. I frantically attempted to get every last drip of sauce and rice into my mouth. I’ve been back a few times and always order the same thing and it’s always as good as the first time, although I’m told everything on the menu is also excellent. Tucson destination material for SURE. Their chips and salsa are also excellent, the service is super friendly (probably even better if you speak Spanish) and the ambiance is a fun, baja style.
Seriously – Go here. Get the Fresh Fish Culichi. Ask no questions.

I wish I had known about this hot tip before deciding where to eat this evening. Can’t wait to try. No questions asked.
There’s always a next time.
Which location was that at?
Also, you mention ceviche, but dont comment on it… Was it good too?
Grande location. Ceviche is great!
judging from the picture, I’d say its the 1009 N Grande Ave one; I have yet to eat there, but i’ve rode past it on my bike, and it smells great.
I always order the PRAWNS culichi.
well. as long as it has the green sauce!
I’ve always had the shrimp culici and never tried anything else. Friends of ours turned us on to this place (the original on North Grande). This place has either just expanded with a banquet room and lovely patio or it will be expanded soon.
Cold-cold beer and great seafood – what more can you want out of life. Almost better than the beach.
P.S. The shrimp cocktail is FANTASTIC. Get one to share before your culici.
Thanks, Pete!
A nurse at my doctor’s office HIGHLY recommended Marisco’s Chihuahua on Grande (very far from home for me, but worth it!!) & practically ordered me to get the Shrimp Culichi. My mouth has been watering ever since then. Oh, and the chips & salsa that are served while you wait? Definitely add some freshly squeezed lime juice to the salsa…and to the culichi. Absolute perfection.
Any chance you can get the recipe for the culichi sauce…or how they prepare the shrimp culichi? I’m SO going there again this weekend!
Glad you liked it. It’s definitely one of Tucson’s best dishes. As for the recipe, I’m sure it’s attainable!
